One man owned a roofing company and liked art. Another man made art and needed a roof. And so this past saturday, a gentle voiced and shy Juan and Arturo arrived at dawn, having driven nearly three hours south from Seattle. After brief introductions they went to work and didn't stop but for one coffee break and lunch. Arturo likes a little sugar but Juan takes his black. It was just a few weeks...
A month ago, when the trees up on the hills were showing the first whispers of autumn, I looked upon the weary and gentle face of Rembrandt. I returned his steady gaze, as a full almost frantic summer winds to an end, with one of wonder and perhaps hunger. His Self portrait as the apostle Paul hung in an exhibit of works traveling from the Riksmuseum. Of the 80 pieces in the exhibit, a scant 8...
![]() Tomorrow night, July 26th, I'm crawling out of my cave. I'm pleased to announce I have a selection of work on display at the Guardino Gallery through August 28th. While I am not the featured artist, for a first toe in the local water this is a great start at a good gallery. The gallery owners believe in their artists and strive to show both an eclectic mix of work and to support so-called...
The e-mails keep coming in asking how the studio project went. The quick answer is that it was a tremendous weekend of giving from a great group of people. We worked through unexpected cold and heavy rain and got much of the framing up. In the end I had to look this horse in the mouth and found a few things amiss. But it was still a great weekend, even if I do have to pull some of the structure...
This weekend, tomorrow, a rambunctious group of generous friends is showing up for a barn raising. This motley group is a small slice of an on-line motorcycle community I've been active in for more than five years. We swap barbs, jokes, and stories over in a place known as Adventure Rider. It's easy to snicker at the idea of an on-line community. I know I usually do. But something sets this...
The tools have been a favorite place to go. I'd just used this wrench to tighten the wheelbarrow's bolts in preparation for the concrete work. I beat out some of the energy it had at the start, but this is no fish head.
Crescent 4" x 6", available ![]() Many a canvas has been primed with this old brush and a few walls too. It may be the only brush I've ever treated with any decency. I like the...
Space to work, to stretch out, is fast coming. In the mean time, there's smaller work to do.Red is supposed to be the hard color to paint. Green can be much harder. It lacks the satisfying punch of its counterpart. That punch can fill an object, giving it form and presence it doesn't really have. Green isn't so lucky. You can't fake it with green.

Beyond pigment and perception, there's more to making a painting than putting brush to canvas. To work, you need time and you need space. I posted previously about the plans for the studio and the wrestling with the city's permit office. Some changes have been made to those plans but, to cut to the chase, I have my permits. Work has begun.Part 1 of the the much condensed tale (who doesn't like...
