Scott Conary (BFA, RISD) has for nearly 20 years pursued painting because, "It is intolerable not to." In the exploration of a landscape, a human torso or the curve of an apple, the paint is the subject as much as any image that might emerge. Playing within this tension between image and surface, he looks to build a presence, a solidity. This is the painting of his heroes - DeKooning, Degas, Rembrandt, Wyeth. Recent larger figurative works build on old family films dating to the 1940s and 1950s. The small still lifes are where the fundamentals and magic of painting and image making are hard to ignore. Both are driven by a love and curiosity of the natural world and how we live within it.
